MUDRA, THE GESTURES THAT CALM THE MIND

Mudra in Sanskrit literally means seal or gesture.

In yoga practice, mudras are symbolic gestures of the hands, and sometimes of the body, that serve to direct and channel vital energy during practice.

In general, mudras:

a. Channel internal energy, helping to restore balance between the five elements represented by the fingers (earth, water, fire, air, ether) and harmonize body and mind;

b. Aid concentration and meditation;

c. Activate energy centers (chakras);

d. Represent symbolic or devotional expression: internal states or spiritual qualities.

One of the most well-known mudras is GYAN.

When the hands are arranged in Gyan Mudra:

• attention focuses on a single point, excluding external stimuli and distractions

• breathing slows

• the body stabilizes

Small signals for the nervous system informing you that you can let go.

Gyan Mudra is a simple gesture, in which the thumb and index finger meet, to bring the mind back to itself.

Gyan Mudra accompanies meditation, breathing, and moments of centering.

An almost invisible detail that the body recognizes immediately.
