What are cookies: A “cookie” is a text file saved on the user’s computer when they access a website to provide information every time the user returns to the same site. It serves as a memory aid for the visited web page. Cookies allow the web server to send information to the user’s browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.) stored on their computer, and it will be read and updated each time the user returns to the site. Cookies help the website adapt automatically to the user. During navigation, the user may also receive cookies from different sites on their terminal (third-party cookies), set directly by managers of those websites for purposes and according to methods defined by them. Depending on their duration, cookies can be session cookies (temporary and automatically deleted from the terminal at the end of the browsing session by closing the browser) or persistent cookies (those that remain stored on the terminal until their expiry or deletion by the user).
Based on their function and purpose of use, cookies can be divided into technical cookies and profiling cookies.
Technical Cookies: Some cookies are used for computer authentication, session monitoring, and storing specific user information accessing a web page. These technical cookies, often necessary to enable the navigation of a website and use all its features, do not require the user’s consent. This category also includes analytics cookies, which collect information about how a user uses a website and help improve its functionality.
Profiling Cookies: Other cookies may be used to monitor and profile users during navigation, study their movements and web browsing habits or consumption (what they buy, what they read, etc.), also for the purpose of sending targeted and personalized advertising. In this case, it requires the prior acquisition of the free and informed consent of the user under Article 7 of EU Regulation 2016/679.
Third-Party Cookies: It may also happen that a web page contains cookies from other sites and content in various elements hosted on the page itself, such as advertising banners, images, videos, maps, or specific links to web pages of other domains residing on servers different from the one on which the requested page is located. In these cases, these are called third-party cookies, usually used for profiling purposes. The use of these cookies requires the prior acquisition of the free and informed consent of the user.
