Training represents a physiological stimulus for the body, and it is between one stimulus and the next that adaptation takes place.
Recovery should not be seen as a simple break, but as an active and essential phase of the adaptation process. Every training load creates mechanical and neural stress: tissues, the nervous system, and motor control are temporarily disrupted. During the recovery phase, our body repairs tissues, reorganises motor control, and increases its capacity to tolerate load: it does not simply return to the previous level, but builds a slightly greater capacity — this is supercompensation.
The balance between activation and recovery is regulated by the autonomic nervous system.
Sympathetic: increases heart rate, raises blood pressure, and prepares the body for effort → activation, stress, performance.
Parasympathetic: slows the heart rate, supports digestion and tissue repair → recovery, repair, motor learning.
When training loads exceed the body’s capacity to recover, the nervous system remains in a state of alert: stiffness, compensations, and persistent fatigue increase, and movement quality worsens. The body does not adapt — it protects itself. A body in protection moves worse, compensates more, recovers more slowly, and increases the risk of overload and recurrence of injury.
Breathing, sleep quality, and load management are key tools for regulating the nervous system. Holistic disciplines such as Pilates and Yoga do not act only at a muscular level, but also on nervous system regulation and on the quality of motor control. They promote the reactivation of the parasympathetic system, improving recovery, coordination, and movement quality.
