You probably don’t know that…… the Florentine New Year in the Middle Ages represented the first day of the civil calendar and that March 25th is still a Florentine holiday. Despite the Gregorian calendar coming into force on January 1st 1582, stubborn Florence continued to consider March 25th as New Year’s Eve until the decree of 1749 established January 1st as the start of the civil year for Florence too.
